The essentials

What Counts as a Dental Emergency?

Severe toothache, facial swelling, a knocked-out or broken tooth, uncontrolled bleeding, trauma to the mouth, and a lost filling or crown causing pain are all dental emergencies. If you’re in pain, contact us — we prioritise patients in pain and hold emergency appointment slots every day.

If you’re not in pain but have a chipped or broken tooth, we’ll still see you as soon as possible. Contact us by phone on 01208 813816, by WhatsApp, by email at info@wadebridgedentalcare.co.uk, or book online.

Your emergency appointment is £220 and includes one item of treatment — for example a filling, an extraction or antibiotics — so most problems are dealt with in a single visit.

What To Do Right Now

  • Knocked-out tooth — hold it by the crown (not the root), place it back in the socket if you can, or keep it in milk. Contact us immediately — speed matters.
  • Broken or chipped tooth — rinse with warm water, keep any fragments, and avoid chewing on that side until we’ve seen you.
  • Lost filling or crown — keep the crown safe, avoid sticky or hard food, and book in. If there’s no pain we’ll see you as soon as possible.
  • Toothache or swelling — over-the-counter pain relief taken as directed and a cold compress can help while you wait. Never place aspirin against the gum.
  • Swelling affecting your eye, neck, breathing or swallowing, or bleeding that won’t stop — go to A&E or call 999. These need hospital care, not a dental appointment.

Emergency Dentist Cornwall — FAQs

How quickly can I be seen in a dental emergency?

We keep emergency appointment slots available every day and prioritise patients in pain. Contact the practice as early as possible on 01208 813816 — the earlier you call, the more likely we can see you the same day.

I’m on holiday in Cornwall — can you see me?

Yes. We see holidaymakers and visitors throughout the year. You don’t need to be registered with us — call 01208 813816 or message us on WhatsApp and we’ll fit you into the next available emergency slot.

Do I need to be registered with the practice?

No. Emergency appointments are open to unregistered patients, visitors, and anyone in Cornwall who doesn’t have a dentist.

What counts as a dental emergency?

Severe toothache, facial swelling, a knocked-out or broken tooth, uncontrolled bleeding, trauma to the mouth, and a lost filling or crown causing pain all count as emergencies. If you’re in pain, contact us and we’ll prioritise you.

What should I do if a tooth has been knocked out?

Handle the tooth by the crown, not the root. If it’s clean, try to place it back in the socket and bite gently on a clean cloth. If that’s not possible, keep it in milk and contact us immediately — the faster you’re seen, the better the chance of saving the tooth.

I’ve lost a filling or my crown has come off — what should I do?

Keep the crown safe if you have it, avoid chewing on that side, and contact the practice. If you’re not in pain we’ll see you as soon as possible; if you are in pain you’ll be prioritised.

What should I do if the practice is closed?

If you need urgent dental care outside our opening hours, call NHS 111 for the out-of-hours dental service. For severe facial swelling affecting breathing or swallowing, or bleeding that won’t stop, go to A&E.

I’m nervous about the dentist — can I be sedated?

Yes. We offer sedation for anxious patients where clinically appropriate. Let us know when you book and we’ll talk through the options.

Can you help with pain and swelling before my appointment?

Over-the-counter pain relief taken as directed can help while you wait, and a cold compress can ease swelling. Don’t place aspirin against the gum. If swelling spreads to your eye or neck, or affects breathing or swallowing, seek urgent help immediately.
