What is a root canal?

A root canal (endodontic treatment) treats infection or inflammation inside the tooth — the dental pulp — which contains nerves and blood vessels. When the pulp is damaged by deep decay, a crack or trauma, bacteria can lead to pain, swelling or abscess. Root canal treatment removes the infected tissue, disinfects the root canals and seals the space to save the tooth.

Signs you may need a root canal

  • Persistent tooth pain (especially when chewing or at night)
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers after stimulus is removed
  • Swelling or a pimple-like bump on the gum near the affected tooth
  • Darkening or discoloration of a tooth
  • A deep cavity that reaches the pulp or a history of trauma to the tooth

If you have any of these symptoms, book an assessment promptly — earlier intervention often means a simpler, more successful treatment.

The root canal procedure — what to expect

  1. Initial assessment & x-rays Dr McNee will examine the tooth, take digital x-rays and discuss options and expected outcomes.
  2. Local anaesthetic
The area is numbed so the procedure is comfortable. Many patients report only minor post-op soreness.
  3. Access & cleaning
Dr McNee creates a small access opening, removes the infected pulp, cleans and shapes the root canals using modern instruments and irrigation.
  4. Sealing the canals
The canals are filled with a long-lasting biocompatible material and sealed to prevent reinfection.
  5. Restoration
Often a crown or composite restoration is recommended afterwards to protect the tooth and restore function. A temporary filling may be placed immediately and a permanent restoration arranged at a follow-up appointment.

Typical appointment time varies depending on the tooth and complexity; some cases complete in one visit, others in two.

Benefits of choosing root canal treatment

  • Saves your natural tooth — avoids extraction where possible
  • Eliminates pain and infection
  • Restores normal chewing and aesthetics
  • Durable solution when followed by a proper restoration

Aftercare & recovery

  • Mild soreness for 1–3 days is common — over-the-counter pain relief usually helps.
  • Avoid very hard or sticky foods on the treated tooth until fully restored.
  • Keep up excellent oral hygiene: brushing twice daily and flossing.
  • Attend any recommended follow-up and crown/restoration appointments to protect the tooth long-term.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Modern anaesthesia and techniques make the procedure comparable to having a filling. Most patients experience relief from the original pain soon after treatment.

With good restoration (often a crown) and oral hygiene, a root-treated tooth can last a lifetime.

The main alternative is tooth extraction followed by replacement (implant, bridge or denture). Saving your natural tooth with a root canal is usually the preferred option where feasible.
